Creamer 's Walk

Last weekend Robin and Hannah went on their first Creamer's walk of the season. The geese arrived on the 12th, right on time even though March was so cold. After viewing the geese Robin and Hannah hiked the boreal trail and saw two woodpeckers.

Soon the plank boardwalk will be surrounded or even floating with spring run-off.

Our Own Great Lake

Yep.....break up time. The snow is melting. melting, melting . Unfortunately the drain is frozen and the water backs up creating a nice lake. Monday morning our heroes arrive, Fairbanks Pumping and Thawing.

Hannah and I went to check it out. After thawing the drain for 11 hours the road was clear by 9pm.

Alas, for one day we had a semi-dry street. Hannah biked and Evelyn lounged in her stroller during the walk. But then on Wednesday the lake was back. Time for me to call DOT.

Self Feeding Baby

At 8 months little Evelyn enjoys feeding herself. She is fairly good at grabbing those chunks of sweet potato, flattened peas, and bits of toast into her hand.

However, getting the food from your hand into your mouth is another matter. Sometimes she forgets that there is food trapped in her other fist. She wonders where the food went. I pry open her hand or shake out her bib. She acts surprised and continues eating. Poor girl.

Evelyn is wearing her dinner quite often these days. On the cheeks, foreheads and yes the hair. We are so proud of her.

By the time Evelyn is 6 she'll have a clean post dinner face, like her sister.

Rite of Spring

The first day of wearing your rubber boots, puddle jumpers, or break-up boots, whatever the title, is a rite of spring. On Friday, April 6, after school, Hannah put on her boots and headed outside. Over the winter Hannah forgot a key rule of wearing rubber boots: if you go into a deep puddle, cold icy water WILL pour over the top of your boots and inside your boot. The result is shocking and cold, involves sobbing and a wet sock trail in the house. It happened last year, the year before, and it happened this year. We have high hopes for next year.....maybe she'll remember.

Easter Fun

Evelyn enjoyed her basket; swinging it around by the handle was great fun. The Easter Bunny could have left an empty basket and Evelyn would have been thrilled. Hannah knew exactly what Easter was all about; following clues to a hidden basket of goodies.

Easter finery. Hannah is wearing an outfit from Nana and Evelyn is wearing a dress from Grandma. Lucky girls.

Yes Evelyn has ruffles on her behind, but we didn't take a picture of it.

On Easter morning Hannah and I met Meg at church and enjoyed a nice service at St. Matt's. Evelyn and Dad stayed home and put the ham in the oven. We had an early Sunday lunch with Meg since Dad had to head off on a field trip at 2pm.

Yes! They are both smiling.

Even Mom has a skirt on. Happy Easter!

Goodbye Winter

Our last trip to the ice park was on March 29, just two days before the glorious park closed for the season. Temperatures were warming up, hence Evelyn is in a stroller instead of the sled.

March was a cold month, even for Fairbanks. We almost broke the record for the coldest March on record. We missed the record due to warm temperatures, above 32 degrees, on the March 31st. On the upside, the cold temperatures kept the ice park open an extra week.

Now we turn our thoughts to spring. The first week of April, Hannah and I began planting our starts, beginning with the herbs.

Parsley, basil, and oregano.
